Following the experience, inspiration, and success of the first book, “Bulgarian Product Design 2000–2022”, published in 2023, Bismar Publishing is preparing a new prestigious collector’s edition, scheduled for release in early 2026 – a publication dedicated to contemporary Balkan furniture design.
This forthcoming volume is the result of extensive research and long-term professional engagement. It offers a comprehensive analysis of developments in the field of furniture design across the Balkan region since the year 2000. The book will feature a diverse and carefully curated selection of furniture pieces currently in production, highlighting both the creative achievements of designers and the contribution of manufacturers who collaborate with them.
Approximately 70 established and emerging designers and studios from 12 Balkan countries will be represented, along with over 500 selected furniture products. The selection process will be conducted by an international advisory board composed of recognized experts in the field. In addition to the product showcase, the publication will include interviews with prominent figures from the Balkan design scene and analytical articles on the furniture industry and design trends in the region.
A dedicated appendix will present relevant institutions such as universities, design festivals, trade fairs, associations, specialized media outlets, and other valuable sources of information from across the Balkans.
The primary aim of this publication is to showcase the creative and industrial potential of a region often underestimated in the European context – the Balkans, home to approximately 140 million people and a furniture manufacturing sector with an annual output exceeding €13 billion.
The book will be a high-quality, large-format edition, printed on premium paper, with a hardcover, comprising 400–450 pages. Richly illustrated and thoughtfully designed, it is intended to inform and inspire professionals, designers, architects, manufacturers, students, and other stakeholders in the field of furniture design. The publication will be in English and distributed across all Balkan countries and selected European markets through specialized bookstores, libraries, and professional events such as trade fairs and design festivals. It will also be available for online purchase. Official launches are planned during major design events in the Balkans and in Bulgaria.
This edition is part of the broader Creative Balkans initiative, which also includes the development of a modern interactive website, curated exhibitions of selected products in European cities, and a series of seminars featuring distinguished voices in Balkan furniture design.
